I have no idea what the dealer charges but it will not be cheaper (in most cases) than your local automotive locksmith. Ballpark your looking at about $150 with two keys. These are not normal keys so the other posters $20 guesstimate is way off, they are transponder keys so the vehicle has to be taught the new keys.

The Ford Dealers should have the key code to your car. Just bring in the Vehicle Identification Number in with proof of ownership and they should be able to do it. I can’t promise a cheaper cost than a locksmith but the there is a possibility for it to be cheaper.

I have a Mercury. It programs by holding down the unlock button on the remote as you turn the ignition to ON (not to START), then OFF for 10 cycles. The car alarm beeps when you have programed the remote. If you have more than one remote, you have to hold down the button on both remotes at the same time you cycle the ignition. I don’t know about Dodge. BTW, these instructions are in my owner’s manual. Maybe they are in yours, too. If you don’t have yours, you can view it on-line.

Locksmiths?

Do locksmiths get much business done because it would seem to me that people don’t always dick something up and lock their key in the car or lock themselves out of the house. So what is anyone a locksmith here do you get what 1 person a month or something? How do you stay in business is it just from stupid mistakes?

If the store has been around for over a year, they most have enough business to stay alive. Most advertise to big companies that have a big job that needs to be done. They may take on jobs like rekeying the entire building and installing doors and locks. Majority of the income is from other business owners and not walk ins.

What do you think is the best car opening book for locksmiths?

Im looking for a good set of books to buy that shows the diagrams of how to open cars for locksmiths. Which ones do you like? I use AllData for the rest of my mechanical needs in the shop, but now that im expanding, this will no longer cut it. Thanks!.

admin answers:

Locksmiths have trade books available through their suppliers. They run $200 – $500 the set because of the limited sales, and are generally sold to established customers.

Many in my area just pick the lock, or use a set of dealer keys, about 250 to the set annually. With the amount of protective shielding around the lock now, slim jims and the like generally aren’t worth the hassle of having 25 to 35 model specific types unless you do a lot of it. So they wedge the window and work the buttons with a stiff probe when no key or pick will do.

The books still won’t substitute for basic unlocking skills – and the best place to practice is a salvage yard where you can easily see what’s going on.

And how would they catch you out?
The reason i ask is because THEY NEVER EVER ASKED ME ANY ID.
He showed the aluminum bodied Adler to GM, and they came out with the 1963 split window corvette shortly after, that looked just like it.

Yes call 0425 499 444 it’s their after hours number. They have a guy on standby who is based in the Eastern Suburbs. Thankfully I came across AL’s after trying about ten others who didn’t even answer! I mean it was NYE, I know everyone wants the night off, but then again they all advertised 24 hours, which in my opinion meant they should have had someone answering the phone.
